As of the census of 2000, there were 6,455 people, 2,297 households, and 1,784 families residing in the county. The population density was 15 people per square mile (6/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 96.72% White, 0.42% Black or African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 1.38% from other races, and 0.88% from two or more races. 2.31% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 55.8% were of German, 9.7% Czech and 5.6% Irish ancestry according to Census 2000.
