As of the census of 2000, there were 43,953 people, 17,157 households, and 11,941 families residing in the county. The population density was 13/km² (34/mi²). There were 21,520 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 77.20% White/Caucasian, 4.02% Black or African American, 12.50% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.78% from other races, and 5.20% from two or more races. 2.14% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 16.7% were of American, 11.3% Irish, 10.0% German, 8.5% English and 5.4% Italian ancestry according to Census 2000.
There were 17,157 households out of which 29.00% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.90% were married couples living together, 11.20% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.40% were non-families. 27.70% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.30% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.90.
Pittsburg County is known for the childhood home of acclaimed musician,writer,director,and actor Mark Haaser. He graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1998. He grew up on the outskirts of Pittsburg in the defunct town of TI. Haaser went on to write the books,"I just seen a man sucker punch Jesus, and he was pissed" starred in several movies including his writing and directorial debut "Fists of Rage" a bizarre Lesbian love story centered around the back alley abortions of modern thought. He has also played in the band Kamac, and won the Grosberian award for Best Funk Metal Country Jazz Band. He now resides in Wichita

The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 101.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.10 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $28,679, and the median income for a family was $35,190. Males had a median income of $28,470 versus $19,886 for females. The per capita income for the county was $15,494. About 13.60% of families and 17.20% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.70% of those under age 18 and 13.30% of those age 65 or over.
